"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin

EC funded SILC (System for Independently Living Citizens) Project

Cloudworld was a partner in the SILC project (it ran from January 2001 to December 2003), partly funded by the European Commission as part of the 5th Framework programme.

The aim of the project was to produce an alarm watch, which could be worn by an elderly person, who could press a button and be connected to a service centre. The watch contained sensors (and could attach further sensors) to monitor the user, and detect signs of a fall, a heart tremor, impending hypothermia, or other risky condition, whereupon the service centre will be called automatically.

The watch contains a microprocessor and software to provide the user with various functions, such a reminder to take medication. In effect the watch is a "wearable computer".

Cloudworld was responsible for the kernel of the software, and for the user interface. The user interface incorporates speech technology and the large character display technology, as employed in Cloudworld's WordAloud product. With the dual modality of output, it is possible to make the watch exceptionally easy to use, even for the elderly person with a visual or hearing impairment.
